SUMMER SURFER   THE WAVE WARRIOR

Summer Surfer is an expression of joy and freedom as much as it is a depiction of a surfer at the precise moment of a manoeuvre.

The Wave Warrior is about experiencing the unrepeatable split second. It is beyond the frozen detail of a photograph... action and "free will", as expressed in body boarding where absolutely anything goes.

THE WAVE MAN   THE WAVE WOMAN

The Wave Man typifies the artist's flat, static figure floating on swirling lines of colour that simulate the ocean's movement. The expressive execution is intentionally crude to reveal a strange type of beauty.

The Wave Woman significantly represents women's ability and devotion to surfing. The expressive execution is intentionally crude to reveal a strange type of beauty.

COOLANGATTA   BEACH DAY, BYRON BAY

Coolangatta exemplifies the artist's connection with the surf and explores his idea of the popular coastal town as a type of fantasy land, an icon for endless summer days. The whimsical illustration of the last moments of the day reflects the artist's personal experience surfing and fishing off the groyne.

Beach Day, Byron Bay celebrates those magic sunny days and perfect waves. What better place to be than at the beach in Byron Bay? Enjoy it today and save it for tomorrow.

THE MILLENNIUM WAVE   WAIMEA SHORE BREAK
The Millennium Wave shows Laird Hamilton, the "Hawaiian waterman", pulling into one of the heaviest waves ever ridden. In August 2000, at the Tahitian reef break of Teahupoo, Laird proved his prowess in surfing one of the meanest waves on the planet.

Waimea Shore Break shows twice world title bodyboarder Andre Botha free surfing one of the most sucky and gnarly waves close to shore at Waimea Bay, in Hawaii.

Andre achieved his top ranking at only 17, when, as the youngest and the first, he took out both the World Title and the Pipeline contest in the same year. He repeated this the following year. In this shot, Andre was one of only a few who tackled the "hectic" wave that day, just for a bit of fun. Not many ride the wave because it is so heavy and often closes out so that one doesn't always come out of the barrels. This, his second wave of the day, came just as he was floating around looking to find one of his fins which had come off during his first wave. In true style he rode the second wave with only one fin, challenged by the heavy current and extreme danger.

SOUTHERN SEARCH 1962   CRYSTAL DREAMING

Southern Search 1962 illustrates one of the photographer's many travels south from his home break in search of waves or a protected corner. The early morning light and distant haze inspired him to stop his 1948 Ford Anglia "convertible" with custom made board racks, and capture the moment. Southern Search encapsulates that feeling of freedom and anticipation in one's search for the perfect wave.

In Crystal Dreaming crystalline, tubular waves are the result of Mother Nature's ocean swells peeling along a well scuptured sand bar. Resident Pandanus Palms are forever observing, as waves speed by with relentless precision. The awaiting sands of the coast ultimately absorb the synergetic effect of the winds, tides and swells.

TWO'S COMPANY   NO FRIENDS ON GOOD DAYS

In Two's Company after waiting three and a half hours you finally get a wave, manage to avoid six people that dropped in on you, didn't run over too many as you weave your way through the thick crowd missing every section all the way to the beach, only then to have to walk five kilometres down the road to the closest car park you could find.

No Friends on Good Days - you know what it's like, looking forward to sharing some good waves with an old surfing buddy. Taking extra care not to scratch the paintwork of the old Holden, you turn around to give him a bit of a hurry up and he's gone. Guess there really aren't any friends on good days.

GOIN' HOME   BEACH GEAR

As the day draws to a close a surfer heads home with thoughts of the day's waves and good times had with friends. All the while she's wondering what the waves will be like tomorrow.

Surfing and the coastal lifestyle go hand in hand in Australia and the beach is seen as a refuge from the rigours of everyday life. Take a break from life and go to the beach for some rejuvenation... right now... go! Don't forget your thongs!

COLOUR OF FINS   BEACHED BOARD

Fins are regarded as the most powerful part of a surfboard and can come in many different shapes, sizes and colours. Both functional and aesthetic, surfboards and fins are more often than not handcrafted by specialists. The pride that these craftsmen take in their profession shines through in examples such as these.

The surfing lifestyle is more than just the act of riding waves. While an image of someone surfing can convey the action, it's often the subtle and intimate image such as a surfer picking up their washed in board, that illustrates the more personal moments.

THE POINT   NOSE RIDE

Ocean swells provide endless inspiration as they peel alongside the perfectly positioned boulders at Lennox Head, NSW.

Today's longboard enables greater flexibility and manoeuvrability, yet the traditional toes on the nose is still the ultimate ride.
